The Importance of Vitamin D for Physiotherapy Treatment in Vancouver & Notable News from Our Clinic
A quiet spring is giving way to a busy summer and as the rain clouds dissipate, we are reminded of the importance of getting enough vitamin D, particularly when undergoing physiotherapy treatment in Vancouver.
Why is Vitamin D Important?
While it is most known for its role in the absorption of calcium, Vitamin D plays a significant role in many of the body’s systems and functions. Vitamin D has been shown to:
Maintain bone calcium
Help prevent osteoporosis
Modulate cell growth
Aids neuromuscular and immune function
Helps treat SAD (seasonal affective disorder)
Sources of Vitamin D
How much Vitamin D you need will depend on your diet, sun exposer, health, age, and even what medications you are on. The sun is the most well-known source of Vitamin D and it’s recommended to get out under those rays for 30 minutes at least twice a week. Other sources of Vitamin D include:
Whole Fish with the Bones
Physiotherapist Karma Chapel Bhutia
As an avid hiker, our own Karma Bhutia is sure to get his required Vitamin D. When he’s not helping his clients recover using his extensive experience with physiotherapy treatment in Vancouver, he’s traveling and photographing his adventures. Karma earned his Master’s Degree in Manual Therapy and Sports Physiotherapy from the University of South Australia and we are truly blessed to have him as a part of our team here at Burrard Physiotherapy.
Saying Goodbye to Andrew Ewert
While we are lucky to have Karma as a part of the team, we are also saddened to have to say goodbye to one of our own, Andrew Ewert, who has worked with us as a physiotherapist. He is moving to Ontario to be closer to his family. Current patients are encouraged to speak with Andrew about finding the best physiotherapist for their continued treatments.
A Parting Word on Marijuana Legalization
Marijuana can help reduce pain and many of our patients benefit from it as part of their pain management regime. For the most part, marijuana use will minimally affect physiotherapy treatment in Vancouver. However, because it can also affect heart rate and reaction time, treatment may need alterations. If you smoke marijuana, it’s important to tell your physiotherapist so they can adjust your therapy as needed.
