The Ultrasound Therapy at Burrard Physiotherapy
Here at Burrard Physiotherapy, we often use multiple therapies throughout your treatment to ensure the best possible results. One such therapy our physical therapists have found to be beneficial is Ultrasound Therapy.
What is Ultrasound Therapy and How Does It Work?
Ultrasound therapy uses specialized ultrasound waves to help promote healing and reduce pain in the affected area. These sound waves, helped with a special gel, penetrate the injured area, providing deep heat and a process called cavitation. Cavitation, which is the rapid expansion and contraction of microscopic gas bubbles in the tissue, is thought to improve healing of the injury.
What Can It Treat?
Physical therapy that uses ultrasound technologies can be applied to a wide range of injuries. They are particularly effective for joint pain and stiffness because the deep heating helps relax the muscles while promoting quicker healing. Commonly treated problems include, but are not limited to:
- Ligament Injuries
- Muscle tear scarring
There are several potential benefits to adding ultrasound to your treatment plan. These benefits may include:
- Decreased Pain – the deep heating helps to reduce the pain, much like a heating pad would.
- Increased Circulation – Improved blood flow is vital to promoting quick healing and recovery.
- Improved Extensibility – Particularly important for Frozen Shoulder and other mobility limited problems.
As Part of a Complete Treatment Plan
Ultrasound therapy alone is not enough to fully treat many injuries, but if often used as part of a complete physiotherapy treatment plan. Since no two bodies are the same, each treatment plan is personalized to ensure the best results for your body.
