Treating Plantar Fasciitis at Burrard Physiotherapy

Plantar fasciitis can cause severe pain in the foot, that if left untreated can eventually affect mobility and overall quality of life. However, the experienced team here at Burrard Physiotherapy can help.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation and pain of the connective tissue at the bottom of the foot called the plantar fascia. At its most basic, the plantar fascia connects the heel and the ball of the foot and aids with walking. When inflamed, this typically causes pain at the heel which is worse for the first few steps of the day and after a long day on your feet.

Common Causes

There are several things that can cause inflammation of the plantar fascia, which include:

  • Trauma to the area, such as stepping on a stone

  • Old, ill-fitting, or improper footwear

  • Muscular imbalance

  • Skeletal factors, such as a flat foot

  • Running long distances or progressing too quickly

  • Age over 40

How Our Team Can Help

At our physical therapy clinic, our goal is to reduce your discomfort and get you back to living your life. Depending on the cause and the individual, there are several things we can do to help treat plantar fasciitis, including:

  • Complete biomechanical assessment for causes

  • Advise on activity modification

  • Ice and heat therapy

  • Electro-therapy (Ultrasounds, laser, and electrical stimulation)

  • Taping and/or night splints

  • Rehabilitation stretches and strengthening

Things You Can Do at Home

The most important thing you can do to aid in your recovery is to follow your therapist’s instructions and refrain from returning to your normal activity level too quickly. Depending on your situation and the cause, you may need to invest in new footwear or inserts and continue the recommended stretches and strengthening exercises.
