What Is Plantar Fasciitis?
Plantar Fasciitis is a sprain, swelling, stiffness, or inflammation of the plantar fascia, the ligament which runs from the heel to the toes in either foot. This ligament provides arch support whenever a person is on their feet, so it is in constant use when standing, walking, or running.
Plantar Fasciitis can be caused by a variety of factors, typically including over-exertion during exercise and poor arch support. These are compounded in people who stand for long periods of time each day, are overweight, or walk with a gait that rolls their feet inwards.
The most common symptom of Plantar Fasciitis is pain and stiffness after sitting or lying down for long periods, particularly when getting up in the morning. The pain may fade after the ligament is stretched out through use, only to return as the day goes on.
Plantar Fasciitis is rarely debilitating, but can cause significant pain and inconvenience to the patient.
